- Cost: pads/rotors/fluids—know the numbers before you buy.
Cooling (a hidden reliability layer)
Cooling issues show up as power reduction, harsh shifts, weak AC at idle, or high fan noise. If your climate is hot, treat cooling as a primary buying criterion.
Tyres and wheel sizes
Big wheels can destroy comfort and raise replacement costs. Balance is luxury: choose sensible sizes unless you genuinely prefer harshness for aesthetics.
4) Interior integrity: materials > screens
Luxury is tactile. Steering wheel leather, switchgear, door handles, knobs, seat controls, and the way panels align. Screens are useful, but they don’t create premium by themselves.

- Press on door cards and center console: creaks?
- Check stitching lines and seam symmetry
- Touch points: do they feel weighted and precise?
5) Software and UX: the new reliability
Software defines modern luxury. Laggy infotainment, unstable connectivity, or confusing controls feel cheap instantly—even in a six-figure car.
- Climate control: can you do it in two seconds?
- Startup speed: does it lag on cold start?
- Update quality: does the brand ship stable fixes?
6) Service and ownership: where money leaks
Two cars can cost the same to buy and feel totally different to own. Ownership is a system: dealer competence, parts pipeline, warranty clarity, and downtime.
Ask these before purchase
- Appointment wait times
- Loaner policy
- Parts availability for common issues
- Warranty exclusions (especially electronics)
7) Total cost: depreciation first
If you care about money, start with depreciation. Then tyres, brakes, insurance, and opportunity cost of downtime. Luxury is not just “maintenance.”
8) The 45-minute test drive plan
- City (15 min): stop-go, speed breakers, tight turns, parking.
- Highway (15 min): wind noise, lane stability, fatigue.
- Rough roads (15 min): suspension harshness and rattles.
Turn music off for 5 minutes. Evaluate what you’ll feel every day.
